Some perceptions and misperceptions about heavily tattooed women

Tattoo Gallery & Pictures

Getting a tattoo is a personal decision, but sometimes it seems like people want to offer their opinions on that choice. Your fashion and hair choices might get critiqued every once in awhile, but if a woman chooses to wear her hair in the long, straight style popular in the 1960s, chances are no one's going to call her a hippie. Yet heavily tattooed women seem to draw a lot of criticism.

Tattooed girls and women face a lot stereotypes and a negative public perception. For some people, it's just body art, no worse than an ugly outfit if they don't like it. But for others, the sight of a woman who chooses to get lots of tattoos is offensive. These people indulge in old-fashioned stereotypes -- like of raucous biker babes -- and operate on the assumption that an intelligent woman wouldn't choose to do that to her body.

One of the reasons people regard women with lots of tattoos negatively is because it violates traditional normative values placed on gender. Getting a tattoo requires a level of toughness and pain tolerance, both of which are typically associated with men. Thus, a woman with many tattoos presents a challenge to this pattern of thinking.

When it comes down to it though, it's your body. It's up to you, as a tattooed woman, to decide how other people's perceptions and stereotypes will affect you. Depending on how you display your tattoos, you could see a negative impact in your career. But staying strong and challenging preconceived notions can help break down this concept and change things for women with tattoos.
