Mexican gang tattoos -- belonging, but at a price
We tend to think of tattoos as something fun and as a natural
part of self-expression. Seldom is the darker side of tattooing in
the public eye. Unfortunately, though, some people do use tattoos
for less desirable purposes, like showing gang membership. Mexican
gang tattoos indicate belonging among members, but also indicate a
larger social problem.
It's important to be able to identify this type of tattoo. This
can help you ensure that your child isn't part of a gang or hanging
out with members of one. Knowing the popular symbols that Mexican
gang culture uses in tattooing is the first step. Praying hands are
common in gang tattooing, as is the cholo symbol.
Also be aware of hand tattoos or tattoos between the fingers --
gang members often identify themselves in this part of the body. For
examples of praying hand tattoos, an example of the cholo symbol,
and web of hand tattoos, check out these images from the
National Alliance of Gang Investigators Association. This site
also differentiates between east coast Mexican gang symbols and west
coast ones -- on the west coast, tattoos of the number 18 are more
common, related to 18th Street.
While tattoo removal is expensive, those in the business are
often devoted to helping young people get out of gangs by providing
assistance in the removal process. Programs set up an exchange where
a former gang member performs community service in return for tattoo
removal. Gang style tattoos don't have to be permanent.
