Moving beyond the Western concept of tribal art tattoos
You can't have tribal art tattoos without the tribal culture and
artwork from the past. But the story of tribal tattooing is an
interesting one, one that began thousands of years ago with methods
of tattooing that seem rather primitive compared to what we use
today to replicate or pay homage to these designs.
Tribal tattoo art can be found in a variety of ancient
civilizations. Evidence from Egypt, Burma, New Zealand, Africa,
Rome, and Great Britain all suggests the use of tribal tattoos,
dating from a couple hundred to more than a thousand years ago.
Animal designs were common in Hawaiian tribal tattooing and in
Burmese and British styles as well.
But modern tribal tattooing isn't just something Western people
do because it looks good and is symbolic or meaningful to them.
People today all over the world still get tribal tattoos that are
indicative of their culture and place in life. In places like Samoa,
the credited home of tribal tattooing; it's still a rite of passage.
Ancient practices are still in place as well. For example, there are
still Arctic artists who create tribal tattoos by threading reindeer
sinew through the skin.
