Lower back tattoos are cropping up in popular culture
Everyone is talking about the popularity of lower back tattoos;
from students on college campuses to actors on Saturday Night
Live to country music stars. These tattoos are extremely
prevalent among women who choose to get body art done, and pop
culture isn't turning a blind eye to that fact.
Recently on Saturday Night Live, there was a sketch about
Turlington's Lower Back Tattoo Remover. This skit suggested that
young women choose to get these tattoos to be cool but the look
won't be cool forever. While professional tattoo artists have noted
that women are often more prepared than men when it comes to getting
a tattoo, the truth is some people may come to regret getting inked.
However, just the fact there was a skit about this on a widely
popular program says a lot about these tattoos.
"Hell Yeah," a country song by Montgomery Gentry, also references
tattoos done to the lower back. While the actual lyric refers to a
tattoo on the "derriere," the music video shows a girl revealing a
tattoo on her lower back. Country music is known as a more
conservative genre, but these extremely popular tattoos for women
have penetrated even those barriers.
Of course, the influence of popular musicians and actresses can't
be ignored when it comes to tattoos on the lower back. Britney
Spears, Alicia Keys, and Christina Ricci have all been photographed
with such tattoos. Women in the media set trends. It doesn’t hurt
that popular fashion is so accommodating, with low-rise and "ultra
low-rise" jeans being all over store racks.
