What do people mean when they talk about tribal tattoo designs?

Tattoo Gallery & Pictures

You hear the phrase "tribal tattoo" a lot, but just what does it mean? What makes one tattoo tribal and another tattoo not? While a lot of this has to do with the style of the tattoo -- the dark colors and bold abstract patterns, for instance -- the actual designs are also related to this type of body art. So what falls into the category of tribal tattoo designs?

Lots of tribal tattoos are basic designs like suns, birds like eagles or phoenixes, dragons, and interesting-looking abstract line patterns. You can also take images like hearts, butterflies, and flowers, and have those tattooed in the standard tribal style. Natural and primal designs are common. They are tattooed most often in black but can be done in darker greens and blues as well.

However, the idea of tribal extends far beyond this to actual tribes. A tribal tattoo also refers to designs from Native American groups like Sioux and Assiniboine. Symbols for water, power, and protection are common and vary from group to group. African tribal designs are also used in tattooing. These kinds of tribal designs connect people from the present to the past.

If you are considering the latter style of tribal tattooing, do your research! Check out some books from the library and do some reading about the tribe or culture whose symbols intrigue you so you can get an accurate tattoo, in addition to an attractive and symbolic one.
