Choosing a writing style for Chinese characters for tattoos
Getting a tattoo in the Chinese language isn't just as simple as
picking out what you want your tattoo to say. First, it's a good
idea to check with a couple authorities in the language to make sure
you have the right characters. Also, there are several different
calligraphy styles available to use in the selected Chinese
characters for tattoos.
While it is more common to see simplified characters in modern
Chinese text, the traditional Chinese character adds even more
aesthetic value to your tattoo. You may prefer thin, flowing lines
on the character for an elegant look or thicker, simpler lines for a
bold appearance.
Choices available to you for a character tattoo include formal,
clerical, running, Wei dynasty stele, and semi-running style. A
clerical style tattoo will be simpler and bolder than the others.
Running, or cursive, is more fluid than the other styles, while
semi-running is a balance between the elegance of the formal
calligraphy and quick, dramatic strokes of cursive. Wei dynasty
stele is another formal style, though a bit bolder.
To get a real picture in your mind of how these styles vary from
character to character, check out this list of a few different words
written in many different Chinese writing styles, including the
simplified and shorthand scripts, from
Omniglot. It will help you to determine what you are looking for
in a script for your tattoo. Then, all you have to do is design it.
