Celtic knot tattoos and their meanings

Tattoo Gallery & Pictures

People are fascinated by the Celtic tradition and the artwork associated with the Celts. This has cropped up in tattooing with greater prevalence. One of the problems that come with this is that people tend to want to know what their tattoos symbolize. Celtic knot tattoos are popular but what do the knots actually mean?

Centuries have past since the period in which the Celts lived. In that time, any records they had of what Celtic knots meant has been lost. People who are fascinated by the beauty and intricacy of knotwork and want to know what the knots mean may be searching for a meaning that doesn't exist.

The popular opinion seems to be that the knots themselves were mostly an attractive and interesting way to fill in the blank spaces of the designs themselves. A Celtic butterfly tattoo symbolizes rebirth but the knotwork infill most likely has no symbolic meaning. We can associate the knots with meanings, but there isn't an ancient meaning that experts have come to agree upon.

There are eight basic knots in Celtic art. You can view them at Thinkythings. As you look through this list, you may notice the beautiful interconnectivity of the lines. This was a prevalent idea in Celtic culture, that the world is all connected, including life on earth and life beyond earth. So, even if knotwork doesn't have any particular meaning, the idea of connection is always there. Knotwork isn't entirely without meaning, but it mostly lies in the tattoo itself.
