A surgical steel tongue ring is the perfect mix of style and practicality

February 09, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

Your mouth is an environment that attracts a lot of bacteria. When you get your tongue pierced, it’s a little harder to keep the area clean because of all the processes going on in your mouth. But you might not know that it’s not just the piercing itself that has an impact on your mouth health. The jewelry that is used does also. That’s why when you get a piercing, it is best to get it done with a surgical steel tongue ring as your starter jewelry.

While we tend to think of metal as a very solid substance, the truth is that metals have small microscopic pores on their surfaces, some more than others. Surgical grade stainless steel is a relatively non-porous metal used frequently in new piercings because lack of pores means that there isn’t a place for bacteria to grow in. While this is important for all healing piercings, it’s especially important in a bacteria-rich environment like the one that surrounds tongue rings.

When you are purchasing tongue jewelry, you’ll notice that all kinds of great styles come in surgical steel. You can be practical without sacrificing style. For instance, you’ll find everything from acrylic ball jewelry to vibrating barbells that provide a truly unique sensation. You don’t have to wear boring jewelry just because you’ve elected to go with the most practical metal there is for body jewelry.

This isn’t to say that there are dangers to wearing gold, niobium, or titanium in your tongue piercing. The latter two are slightly porous, so you don’t want to get pierced in them but you can wear them. Also, body jewelry made out of these other metals usually contains higher nickel content than surgical stainless steel, which can irritate and cause allergic reactions in the piercings of some people. But when it comes to the perfect tongue jewelry, it’s hard to go wrong with surgical grade stainless steel.
