The history of punk rock and its impact on popular artists today

February 01, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

The history of punk rock begins in the 1970s, when the world was in flux politically, economically, and musically. Music was getting corporate and prepackaged. Something was missing. That something was recaptured in clubs like CBGB’s in New York by bands like the New York Dolls, the Velvet Underground, and the Ramones.

The music wasn’t complicated. The chord progressions were simplistic and the lyrics were at turns accessible sing-a-long material and angry, aggressive diatribes against the establishment. The movement crossed the ocean into England with the Sex Pistols, who put out only one album together but left an indelible stamp on punk rock history. They criticized the British government and social class system.

The Dead Kennedys kept the movement alive through the Reagan administration, with blistering lyrics about the economic situation in America, the government, and conformity. Again, popular music at this time was designed for mass public consumption. Bad Religion and NoFX picked up the torch and still release albums today.

Recently, there has been a trend towards radio-friendly punk-infused pop music. Less Than Jake, Blink 182, Good Charlotte, The Ataris, The Used, and New Found Glory are some examples of music that retains the simplicity of punk music and the aggressive singing style while keeping in touch with today’s youth. These bands often incorporate ska sounds into their style. Bands like Alien Ant Farm and Yellowcard might not be fighting against the establishment in the same way, but they are still fighting against manufactured, corporate pop.

If the more recent bands sound a lot more familiar than the earlier ones, take the time to check out their sounds as well. Chances are you wouldn’t be enjoying the sounds of the Foo Fighters and A Perfect Circle without the trail-blazing tunes of the Ramones and Sex Pistols.
