The Georgian controversy over genital body piercing

January 27, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

In early 2004, the Georgia House of Representatives was faced with a bill about outlawing female genital mutilation. The bill contained an amendment about genital body piercing on women, and it passed. This means that women over the age of eighteen who would like to get a genital piercing would not be able to do so. The legislators were surprised to discover that some women would choose to get it done.

The initial outcry was about female genital body piercings being banned while no provision was made against the piercing of male genitals, but closer examination revealed the bill’s point was to stop female genital mutilation. However, another problem arises from that – shouldn’t lawmakers be aware of such a thing as body piercing before adding an amendment that raised such a ruckus?

There are people even in the piercing community who view genital piercing as something unclean and dangerous. The truth is, as long as you are having protected sex while the piercing heals and follow aftercare instructions, it isn’t any more dangerous than other piercings. In fact, you’re less likely to spread germs from your hands to a genital piercing.

It isn’t surprising there was tremendous Internet backlash over this article. Genital piercing is profoundly personal, as it helps people to reclaim their private parts as their own. The piercings can mark healing from abuse or rape. For some women, it is an expression of their femininity. How are they supposed to react when male genital piercing isn’t mentioned?

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the bill died in the Senate. However, the issues raised are still relevant. Piercing enthusiasts may want to pay closer attention to their state government’s proceedings when it comes to piercing issues to keep this from happening again.
