Common symbols found in gothic jewelry

January 27, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

Part of the gothic fashion sense includes symbols from pagan, Celtic, and Wiccan culture incorporated into jewelry. Some people choose to wear jewelry with these symbols because of the aesthetic value. For others, the choice to wear symbolic gothic jewelry is rooted in the meanings behind the symbols.

The ankh is an Egyptian symbol that reflects the idea of eternal life. For some, it also represents a symbol of the Goddess and God heads. The pentagram, also known as a pentacle, is an encircled star that holds many meanings, including the interconnectedness of masculinity and femininity, the union of the elements, and wholeness. The Eye of Horus also is taken from Egyptian culture and offers protection to the wearer. Celtic crosses and knots are also a part of gothic jewelry.

Skulls, bats, faeries, and spiders are also common in goth jewelry. Jewelry tends to be sterling silver and comes in many forms, including earrings, necklaces, pendants, chokers, and rings. You can also incorporate fabrics like into jewelry, like using a strip of velvet for a choker. Body piercing jewelry is also available with gothic symbols, so you can enjoy your favorite signs anywhere on your body.

Chances are your usual purveyor of gothic clothing sells related jewelry as well. But if you are looking for online bargains or prefer to order off the Internet, there are several great resources out there. Abaxion and Painful Pleasures are two good places to start. The former has tons of general jewelry and the latter is more body jewelry oriented. The Goth Shop is another great resource for jewelry.
