What gothic clothing and accessories make up gothic style?

January 27, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

What makes clothing gothic? For one small adjective, it seems to cover a lot of ground. There is no one defining characteristic for gothic clothing; rather, there are a lots of smaller elements that together make up the gothic style and fashion sense.

Gothic clothes tend to be dark in color – black is very popular, but you’ll also see dark reds and blues. People don’t shun white, though – it stands out powerfully against the darker shades. Leather and vinyl are popular fabrics, as it seems bondage and fetish clothing is a part of the gothic fashion subculture.

Popular items of clothing include capes and cloaks, gloves, fishnet tights, ruffled poet’s shirts, trench coats, and gloves. Some gothic styles may be more formal than others. For instance, one woman might prefer a long, velvet dress while another might go with black pants and a band t-shirt. One man might wear vinyl pants and a ruffled shirt while another will wear a trench coat.

But the gothic style isn’t just clothing – spiked belts, pentacle or pentagram jewelry, pale make up and dyed hair (usually black, but also red or colors not found in nature, like purple) are all part of this style.

People who enjoy the gothic lifestyle are no strangers to body piercing, and piercing jewelry can help convey gothic ideals. Nipple piercings, tongue piercings, and nose piercings tend to be popular. You can find body jewelry in a gothic symbol, like pentagram or ankh, on websites such as Glitterings and Body Jewelry by Scavenge. Let your style reflect your gothic sense from clothes to jewelry!
