What is body modification?

January 19, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

What do you think of when you hear the term “body modification” mentioned in polite conversations? Piercings, tattoos, and scarifications are all part of modifying procedures you can elect to do to your body. Modifications range from mild, everyday changes to extreme body changes.

Tattoos and piercings have become fairly accepted in the mainstream. Some people may not even consider a small lower back tattoo or lip ring as real body modifications, though they are. However, for many, one little tattoo or a fairly innocuous piercing is as far as they go.

For others, modifications to the body become a way of life. There exist subcultures of people who are constantly seeking new things to try for their bodies. The body becomes a canvas in this instance. More extreme procedures include body suspension, tongue splitting, body implants, and play piercing.

There are conventions and active internet communities for those who are devoted to modifying their body. You can examine their stories, pictures, and online society at the Body Modification Ezine (BME) website. This site will explain more extreme procedures like scrotal implants and using hooks for suspension in an in-depth manner and put you in touch with people who have done such things.

It can be hard to be a modification enthusiast. The general public may not look on your scars as something important and special to you; instead they may wonder why someone would choose do that to his- or herself. Finding a supportive group of people who share these interests can help you discover things about yourself and your body.
