What does a piercing needle look like?

Body piercing has certain requirements when it comes to needle
standards. A piercing needle is different from needles you’re
familiar with at the doctor’s office, and it’s certainly different
from the piercing guns used to pierce ears at the mall.
Understanding what you’re getting pierced with is the first step to
having a calm and safe experience.
Piercing needles come packaged individually. This ensures their
sterility. A good piercing professional will open the needle in
front of you so that you can see that he or she is using it for the
first and only time to create your piercing. Needles that do not
come sterilized must undergo autoclave sterilization.
Needles used for body piercings come in a variety of gauges
tailored to the area of the body that you want pierced. A nose
piercing requires a thinner needle than a navel does, for instance.
Your piercing artist will tell you what gauge or she is using. A
larger needle means that the gauge size is smaller.
The needles are hollow and pointed at the end. This design
reflects their use in creating a hole in the skin, just as needles
used by medical professionals are designed to draw blood. Using
anything but a piercing hollow needle to get a body piercing is a
dangerous idea, and is best avoided. Nor should you attempt to
pierce yourself, even if you have the proper needle.
Depending on the area you have pierced, your artist will use a
receiving tube for the needle to effectively “catch it” at the exit
hole, thus preventing any collateral damage to the surrounding
tissue. The tubes are also hollow, and they will be of a lower gauge
than the needle used for piercing.
