What are the risks associated with getting your nose pierced?

January 19, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

There are risks associated with getting any kind of body piercing, with the dangers varying by piercing. Getting your nose pierced comes with its own set of risks that anyone considering getting this piercing should know about before sitting down in the piercer’s chair.

The nasal area is hotbed for bacterial growth and exposure, which can lead to infection when you get a pierced nose. In order to keep this from happening, always wash your hands before handling your piercing. Clean hands make the healing process a lot easier. Make sure you clean the nostril according to your piercing professional’s aftercare guidelines as well to avoid potentially dangerous infections.

Another danger that comes from nose piercing is the risk of inhaling a piece of the jewelry. To avoid this, select your nostril jewelry wisely. Take care when it comes to the backing piece. Check periodically (with clean hands of course) to make sure your jewelry is properly secured in your nose.

Other complications associated with nose piercing are the formation of keloids and the difficulties that arise from a runny nose. Keloids are the formations of scar tissue buildup. If you are prone to them, they may complicate a piercing.

A runny nose is going to irritate your piercing while it’s healing. Avoid getting pierced during the height of cold season or during the winter. Make sure you are getting enough vitamins and eating right to boost your immune system while your nose heals.

If you follow your piercing aftercare instructions and leave your nose alone to let it heal, chances are that you will avoid these risks.
