Play piercing for pleasure and enlightenment

January 19, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

A lot of people who enjoy body modification get a special thrill just from the piercing process itself. Couples who enjoy the thrill of piercing and get pleasure from testing their pain threshold may enjoy play piercing.

Play piercings are piercings done for the sensation of being pierced, rather than having the body decorated with jewelry. Usually, people use hypodermic needles when engaging in this type of piercing.

If you enjoy BDSM or CBT elements in your sex life, piercing for the sake of sensation may be an exciting addition. This type of piercing allows you to pierce yourself or be pierced by your partner. You may work up to suspension or pulling with hooks after piercing, for personal or sexual reasons.

Because the needle piercing flesh undoubtedly causes pain, some people use this not only to test their pain threshold but to expand their minds. This is not a new concept – there is a lot of historical documentation of Native Americans using self-torture to open their minds to the reception of visions. It’s an ancient practice and it certainly isn’t exclusive to American body modification enthusiasts. Using play needle piercing to open the mind also puts a person in touch with history and other cultures.

This type of piercing isn’t something one should undertake lightly, no matter what the reasons behind it are. Always use sterile needles, never reuse them, and make sure to disinfect the area beforehand. You’ll want to train or obtain instruction from an experienced piercer before you and your partner attempt this. Spend time learning so you can maximize your benefits.
