Want to learn how to body pierce? Here’s how

January 19, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

Body piercing is a fun and rewarding profession. You’re helping others achieve the look they’ve always wanted and helping people find their own means of self-expression. Learning to body pierce will grant you a useful and practical skill.

There are people out there who will view a piercing video and think that’s qualification enough to pierce themselves. This is not true. Self-piercing is cheaper and a way to circumvent age restrictions on piercing, but it is extremely dangerous. You must learn about proper placement so as to avoid arteries and blood vessels. Chances for infection are also extremely high when a person pierces his- or herself.

A much safer, better way to go about learning how to become a professional piercer is to visit the website of the Association of Professional Piercers (APP). The APP provides valuable information on how to become a piercing apprentice. Under their guidelines, you must learn CPR and first aid practices. You also must learn about sterilization practices, aftercare information, and how to recommend the proper jewelry.

The APP is your best resource for finding members in your community who can help you get an apprenticeship. It takes at least a year to fill all the requirements of classes, seminars, and practical experience. Their guidelines also require you to observe all piercing practices before performing them yourself.

Safety and reputability are of the utmost importance to the APP. An apprenticeship and eventual membership to this association means that clients can feel safe in your hands.
