The perception of pierced women in the workplace

January 19, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

With tattooing and body piercing on the rise, public perceptions of tattooed and pierced women are changing. Or are they are? While lots of people have opened their minds in recent years about women with piercings, others still believe that body art indicates something negative about a woman.

Some think that a pierced girl is loose, immoral, and too wild and crazy for her own good. Four years ago, a male writer in the Tucson Weekly blasted women who decorate their bodies as stupid and unattractive. There are men who don’t care and men who find this exciting because they believe a woman with piercings must be more sexually uninhibited. This could carry over to work.

A woman with piercings may find herself at a disadvantage in the workplace. Employers may immediately write off a woman with a facial piercing as irresponsible or rebellious. Women find themselves conforming to conservative workplace standards in order to get ahead in the corporate world. Even if the dress code doesn’t prohibit piercings, some women cover them up anyway so their coworkers don’t form the wrong impression.

A recent article on Women's Wall Street cited some interesting statistics. Results from a survey about piercing and tattoos in the work place indicated 42% of managers would think less of someone if they had visible body art while 81% of those surveyed said piercings other than ear were unprofessional. A woman with a piercing is not easily accepted in the business world.

Women get pierced for many reasons: to cope with a stressful event, to explore their sexuality, or simply to be different. But what works for a young college girl may not work as well when she embarks on her career path. Women in the workplace with piercings will either have to put retainers in or deal with the stereotypes that still exist.
