Learn how to pierce from professional guides

January 19, 2005
By:  Lori Wilkerson

Becoming a professional is more than just knowing how to pierce properly. It involves being aware of the risks of infection, knowing the importance of aftercare, and being able to advise your clients properly. If you are thinking about a career as a professional piercing, there are training resources available that can get you started, though, that give you a great foundation.

Two sites that offer excellent training videos on how body piercing is done are www.piercinghelp.com and www.piercingpros.com. Both have professionally designed videos that give you step-by-step instruction on the latest piercing techniques with clear information and answers to your basic questions. It’s a good starting point for seeing if this is a career you want to pursue.

No video is a substitute for real life experience, however, so you should also take the next step by telling a professional that you would like to learn to body pierce by becoming an apprentice. Many piercing parlors offer apprenticeships that last from six months to two years and give you valuable expertise. Ask questions about their apprenticeships and what is involved, including what kinds of courses might be needed on health issues. No amount of training on body piercing is complete until you take a course in first aid and another in blood borne pathogens. Safety should always be a part of learning proper piercing practices.

The bottom line is that learning how to perform piercings requires dedication and hard work, so if you are sure this is the path for you, contact the Association of Professional Piercers (APP) at www.safepiercing.org for more information.
