The vertical labret option for exotic lips

January 7, 2005
By:  Lori Wilkerson

Which one to get – the labret, or a lip ring? If you’re just not sure and you want to get something really exotic, you should think about a vertical labret. This unusual lip and chin piercing combines the two looks into one.

Using a curved barbell, this special type of labret jewelry has a post that is in the traditional labret position (usually centered between the lower lip and the chin). The barbell itself then curves inside the mouth and out over the lower lip so that the upper barbell rests on the top of the lower lip. Suggestive and rather sexy, sitting there on the edge of the lip…

Not everyone can adjust to this unique type of labret, though, so take a few things into consideration. First, you will have a barbell in your mouth to contend with. Can you adjust to the feel of it without constantly fiddling with it? Playing around with it or rubbing your tongue against it is a big no-no.

Also, this type of labret is prone to migration if it isn’t done properly by a very experienced, professional piercer. This isn’t one you want to do yourself or you’ll end up with a migration or rejection problem, which is uncomfortable and less than appealing for a period of weeks or months.

When done properly, though, nothing frames full, inviting lips better than vertical labrets. Or, if you’re feeling really adventurous, a pair of vertical labrets – one on each side of your mouth!
