Redefining body art for today’s world
Humans have been decorating and enhancing the appearance of their
bodies for tens of thousands of years, a tradition that is usually
referred to as body art. The interesting thing is that we often make
a distinction between what we consider normal art done to the body and what we
consider beyond the fringe.
We don’t stop to think about most jewelry as a form of
artistic body adornment,
but it is. In ancient times jewelry was not only decorative, but
indicated rank and social status as wealth as wealth and caste.
Makeup is also a form of body art. Today we use makeup primarily to
enhance certain features and to increase our beauty, but in ancient
times makeup was often worn for ritual reasons.
But when most people talk about body art, they are talking about
the more unusual stuff, the adornments that expresses individuality –
body piercing, tattoos and other body modifications. Body adornments today
is much more personalized than it was centuries ago - it is no
longer necessarily tied to traditional ideas of beauty or status or
imbued with ritual significance, except to the wearer.
Modern body artists and the works they create are an individual expression of beauty, power, or
simply a form of self-gratification. What feels good, looks good or
gives self-confidence to one person may not be appealing or
understandable to another. But in today’s world - body jewelry, body
piercing and tattoos enable everyone to express their own inner
artist with personalized art showcased by their own bodies.
