Tragus piercing requires care

December 3, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

A tragus piercing is a delicate procedure because the area (that little tab of skin and cartilage the sticks out at the front of the ear and partially covers the ear canal) is small and so close to the head. A skilled piercer should do this type of piercing to make sure it is properly placed in the fold close to the head on the first attempt, other wise a tragus piercing may migrate somewhat or heal crooked.

Nearly all tragus piercings you see are a captive bead ring between a 20 and 14 gauge for good reason – these are comfortable and work well in that small of an area. Anything thinner might cut right through, anything larger will have a tendency to get caught or be a hindrance in the ear canal and not hang properly.

A tragus piercing needs careful cleaning every day, following the aftercare instructions provided. This is especially true since this is in a part of the body where infection can lead to serious complications. You don’t want an infection of a tragus piercing that could spread to other parts of the ear, and sleeping on a tragus piercing will only aggravate the problem.

So when you go for a tragus piercing, keep in mind that you will need to take special care with your ears (no wearing earphones, extra care when talking on the phone, etc.) for at least three to six months if you want to keep it.
