Differences in getting a tattoo and piercing between men and women
Recently, the University of Florida conducted a study with 280
college students as subjects about getting a tattoo and piercing on
the body. They found that men and women did not have the same
responses when it came to getting a tattoo and body piercing.
Well over half of the women involved in the survey – which
included more males than females – reported back that they had a
body piercing. Less than 20% of the women had tattoos, however. The
women were also pierced on average at a younger age.
This could suggest that peers play a part in a girl’s decision to
get pierced, as over 80% of the women in the study got pierced at
under the age of eighteen. One girl’s decision to do it may set off
another’s. More men than women described themselves as thrill
seekers. Body piercing and tattooing are possibly a bonding
experience between friends for females, and an adventure for men.
Roughly half of the men in the study reported having a piercing;
the same number reported a tattoo. This might enforce the idea that
men feel it is more socially acceptable for them to get tattoos than
it is to get body piercings. A survey of jewelry for body piercings
enforces the idea that navel piercings and nipple piercings are
predominantly for women, for instance. Men have fewer options when
it comes to body piercing.
Though the reasons behind body piercing and tattoos vary between
genders, one thing is the same for both. Piercings and tattoos are
becoming increasingly popular among young people.
