The history behind the placement of a nose stud

Not very long ago, if a man wanted to get his ear pierced, he had
to be careful about which ear to choose. An uninformed straight man
might end up with an earring in the left ear, which was a code to
denote homosexuality. Does getting a nose stud have the same
ramifications? Is there something you should know before you’re in
the piercing chair, lest you convey a message that does not apply to
you?
Nose piercing has been around since biblical times. In the 1500s
in India, getting nose studs became a popular practice for women. In
Indian medicine, the left nostril is linked to the female
reproductive system. Getting pierced was seen as a way to ensure
that painful events like childbirth and menstruation went easier. In
Bedouin culture, the size of a nose ring reflected how rich a family
was.
Nowadays, a piercing professional most likely will ask you which
side you prefer to get your nostril pierced. Nose piercing and studs
were brought to American culture as a way to challenge the status
quo more than anything. A woman getting pierced might choose the
left nostril to go with tradition, but it’s certainly not wrong for
a man to choose the left nostril either.
Just look at singer Lenny Kravitz, for instance. Not only is his
left nostril pierced, but he has a piercing in his right nostril as
well. So, whether you are male or female, choose whichever nostril
you want – or choose both!
