Your guide to septum piercings

Septum piercings are placed in the area between the nostrils. The
piercing can be done either in the cartilage or in the nose’s softer
area above of the cartilage. The latter is a more pain-free and
popular choice. A good septum piercing is placed forward and
well-centered.
Like oral piercings, piercings done to the nose – whether in the
nostril or the septum – require extra care. Any piercing is
susceptible to infection, but the nose is especially prone to
bacteria. Diligence in cleaning the pierced area is extremely
important. Your piercing professional will recommend some products
for keeping the septum area clean. If not, ask.
The piercing jewelry should be around 16 gauge and either a
circular barbell or a captive bead ring. The general consensus seems
to be that it’s not a very painful piercing to get, and it won’t
become that way as long as you take care of it. Any adjustments you
need to make in jewelry placement when cleaning your piercing should
be made using the bottom of the septum ring – keep your hands away
from the shaft of the jewelry!
A piercing to the septum area will take between one to two months
to heal. This is not the ideal piercing for large amounts of
stretching because of the cartilaginous nature of the nose. The
piercing impinging upon the cartilage is pretty painful. 12 is
generally the lowest gauge you should go, though depending on your
nose you could go down to 10.
After your piercing has healed, enjoy all the interesting jewelry
for septums, from crescents to tusks to spikes!
