Body piercing supplies need to be in top condition

October 22, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

When getting a body piercing, it goes without saying that the piercing parlor you go to should have all of the required body piercing supplies on hand and properly prepared for the procedure. But have you thought about the condition and quality of the body piercing supplies they use? You should.

Ask questions when you get a piercing to make sure they are using the best possible body piercing supplies and that they are kept in top condition. A few to ask:

  • Have all of your body piercing supplies been autoclaved for this procedure?
  • Are your piercing needles individually packaged, sterile needles? Will they be opened in my presence just prior to piercing?
  • How often do you check your body piercing supplies, such as checking to make sure the pliers are properly tightened, etc?
  • Is your equipment made of surgical steel?
  • Do you have all of the first aid supplies that may be needed in the event of a complication?

Any reputable piercer will be glad to answer all of these questions clearly and will explain anything you don’t understand regarding their procedures. If you look at their body piercing supplies and see the proverbial “duct tape” repairs on the pliers or forceps that don’t look spotless, walk out of the parlor without getting your piercing. The care that they give their body piercing supplies will be a reflection of the care they give you and your piercing.
