Tongue piercings – an ancient tradition turns into a trend

November 26, 2004
By:  Bob Whitehead

Years ago, the Mayans pierced their tongues in order to communicate with the spirits of their ancestors. Tongue piercings nowadays reflect aesthetic choices more than spiritual ones. People have a variety of reasons for getting tongue piercings, and there’s a lot of fun jewelry to enjoy.

One benefit of tongue piercings is that a lot of people find them quite erotic. Tongue rings can enhance sexual pleasure for couples. Men or women might enjoy vibrating tongue rings for this purpose. The batteries in these tongue rings last up to one hour and come with barbell or fuzzy tips. The Tiggler is one of the more well-known brands of vibrating tongue rings. You can enhance your piercing and your love life at the same time!

Tongue barbells are the most common form of jewelry for tongue piercings. Types of barbells include the standard straight kind, doorknockers, and jackhammers. Doorknockers have a small ring on the end instead of a ball and jackhammers have what looks like a handle on the end.

Barbells for tongue piercings have a variety of balls on the end that come in many colors and shapes. There are spiked ends, jeweled ends, and simple colored balls. In order to avoid tooth chipping, try to avoid acrylic balls on the barbell. This material leads to chipping more than any other.

Tongue piercings are done about an inch from the tip and in the center to avoid major blood vessels. This is called a dorsoventral piercing. Dorsolateral piercings are on the sides of the tip of the tongue and are quite rare. Piercers tend to avoid them because it is harder to miss the blood vessels.
