Lip ring placement depends on lip size, personal preference

October 22, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

A lip ring (not to be confused with a labret, which is a stud in the crease below the lower lip and above the chin) refers to a ring or circular barbell that goes through the lip, usually vertically, somewhere along the lip line. While the labret is still the most popular form of lip piercing, there are plenty of people who think the lip ring is the sexiest form of facial adornment. After all, it draws attention to the curve of the lip, which is quite tantalizing!

How do you decide where to put your lip ring? Talk to your piercer first. He’ll guide you as to placement that will be best in terms of the fullness and shape of your lips, how well the ring will fit, and ease of aftercare. Most piercers will suggest that you start with a captive bead ring, which makes for easy cleaning and is less likely to come loose or fall out during the healing process.

Once your piercer has given you some suggestions, think about it aesthetically. Do you like the idea of your lip ring being a small, subtle touch at the corner of your mouth, or do you prefer something bolder that’s more front and center? These are questions only you can answer. But your piercer will have the final say based upon his professional evaluation of the shape of your mouth, gum line and teeth. A lip ring can be beautiful, but you should wear it only when it is suited to your mouth.
