The ins and outs of navel piercings

November 26, 2004
By:  Bob Whitehead

If you walk through any high school or college campus these days, chances are you see lots of belly-baring tops showing off navel piercings. Young women love navel piercings for the fun jewelry, the flirtatious fun of showing off the belly button, and the flexibility the piercing gives.

Unlike facial piercings, navel piercings can be covered easily by clothing. Someone considering piercing their belly button need not worry about it being inappropriate for work. You can cover it during the day for a conservative look and then show off the area at night for a more wild appearance.

State law for the age of getting pierced ranges from sixteen to eighteen and may require parental consent for those under the age of eighteen. Minors who want navel piercings should take into account that they may not be done growing. Getting pierced as a teenager and growing afterwards may affect the placement of jewelry, leading to a less attractive look.

Navel piercings are tailored to the shape of your belly button. It all depends on the depth, size, and angle of the navel area. The piercing process is different for a skinny “donut” shaped navel than it is for a curved one.

The standard piercing for the belly button starts above the belly button and goes through the top. Other looks include the horizontal piercing, where you would put a curved barbell in two holes above the belly button. The area can also be pierced several times so you could conceivably have navel piercings above and below the belly button.

After the type of piercing is chosen and the navel area is healed (which takes about nine months), the only thing left to do is find fun jewelry to show it off!
