Body modification and genital jewelry

First you might have considered a small tattoo on your bicep or a
quick trip to the plastic surgeon for a few snips, and now, maybe,
you are wondering about adding some genital jewelry? These all
require forms of body modification that make different statements
about how a person perceives beauty, pleasure, or even pain. The
reasons people pick to adorn themselves with a tattoo while others
choose genital jewelry are clearly a reflection of individuality and
personal taste.
Why is it though that some people choose liposuction or breast
augmentation while others choose to add some genital jewelry?
Amazingly, many of the reasons are actually the same.
Reasons people might choose genital jewelry:
- To enhance their sex lives,
- To make a statement,
- To be
beautiful,
- To align with a societal subculture, or
- To shock
people.
Whatever the reason, any form of body modification requires some
knowledge of the risks and benefits before attempting it. Genital
piercing can be painful. It is less painful when it is a surface
piercing only. The genital area is also susceptible to infections
from the wounds. Proper healing of the piercing is of primary
importance once the procedure is completed. That is why most genital
jewelry is made with metals that will not cause allergic reactions
or be subject to corrosion due to urination. For this reason, the
metals often used for genital jewelry are: gold, niobium, surgical
stainless steel, or titanium. However, acrylic is sometimes used as
well.
Genital jewelry choices abound, coming in many forms, colors, and
sizes. The metals can often be anodized in many different colors.
The available shapes are numerous too. If one likes looped jewelry,
you can choose a niobium captive bead ring or a circular barbell. A
straight barbell has a sharper, straightedge look. And if one can’t
make up one’s mind, you can always choose something that is like a
squiggly line: a curved barbell.
In the end, genital jewelry can be a unique and creative way to
express one’s self through the art of body modification.
