Learning more about getting a nipple piercing

January 4, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

A nipple piercing is one of the few body piercings out there that are easy to hide. Unlike body piercings done to the tongue, eyebrow, lip, and labret, nipple piercings are easily hidden. No matter what you do by day, chances are you can have pierced nipples. Celebrities like Janet Jackson and Christina Aguilera have helped to popularize the piercing.

Pierced nipples are for both men and women. Those who have inverted or especially small nipples may need to have the piercing artist examine them first in order to determine if they can accommodate a piercing.

The male nipple is pierced closer to the body than the female nipple because of size. Women are pierced at the base of the nipple while a male piercing would be more in contact with the areola.

For women who get their nipples pierced, it’s advisable to wear a cotton sports bra during the healing process. It will keep the area dryer. Or, use a nursing bra. Men will want to sleep in a cotton tee shirt at night to protect the piercing. Clean sheets are a must as well.

Hands and mouths need to stay away from the piercing during the first few weeks of healing. No doubt your partner will be excited by the new piercing, but avoiding infection is so important. Your piercing artist will have their own explicit instructions for aftercare and is always there to answer any questions you might have.

Pricing for pierced nipples varies from studio to studio. The window seems to be between $35 and $55 for one nipple and between $75 and $100 for both. The price often depends on the jewelry you select.
