Exploration of cultural heritage leads to renewed interest in history of body piercing

September 09, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

The history of body piercing is thousands of years old and has taken many interesting twists and turns, but perhaps the most recent turn is the surprising resurgence of interest in old cultural rituals that had fallen into the annals of the history of body piercing hundreds, if not thousands, of years ago as people become interested once again in their ancient heritage.

Although the history of body piercing includes many instances of ritual piercings that were originally intended for such purposes as to signify fierceness in battle (Maori or Mayan nose tusks), this hasn’t been done for generations. Recently, however, people who can trace their lineage back to these ancient cultures have begun to reclaim these customs not to make themselves appear fierce, but to feel a connection with their tribal roots.

The same is occurring with some women, who are intrigued by the association of beauty with such tribal rituals as stretched earlobes or lips. While not taken to the extremes that are demonstrated in the long history of body piercing, some women enjoy getting these piercings in order to reinforce a sense of cultural identity.

This same type if interest can be found in the new popularity of tribal tattoos, where the actual meaning is no longer relevant but the tribal connection is extremely important. If you are interested in culturally significant body piercing, look into the history of body piercing specific to your ethnic background for some ideas on what piercings your ancestors may have cherished!
