Belly button rings first popularized by supermodels in 1990’s

So many women today sport belly button rings that it’s hard to
imagine a time when you didn’t see them peeking above low-rise jeans
and bikini bands around the world. Belly button rings have become a
part of the fashion mainstream faster than any other type of body
modification, probably because it was originally re-introduced to
general attention by fashion models.
In 1994, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell wore their belly
button rings the same week at London fashion shows and sent a shock
wave through the fashion industry. While they didn’t say, many
assume they got pierced together, since they unveiled their new
rings within one day of each other.
Soon after, celebrities like Cher and Madonna began piercing
their navels to show off their toned midsections and enhance
skin-revealing fashions like those worn on the fashion runways.
Of course, belly button rings had been around for decades before
this, but when the supermodels flaunted them at fashion shows, they
became an accessory that was sought after by people who weren’t part
of the fringe body modification movement. For these women, it wasn’t
a form of personal expression or rebellion. Belly button rings
became, like pierced ears, a simple fashion statement.
For this reason, belly button rings are now one of the most
commonly requested piercings done. So perhaps the piercing parlors
should say, “Thanks,” to those supermodels!
