Preventing belly button jewelry irritation

Your first belly button jewelry is usually a bent barbell or a
captive bead ring, both of which make it relatively easy to clean
the piercing wound. There are a few problems you may run into,
however, with this new belly button jewelry during the healing
process. Since this can take several months, you should take some
precautions to make sure you don’t do anything to aggravate the area
or pull or tug the jewelry.
First and foremost, you cannot remove your belly button jewelry
until the area is completely healed, and this can be hard to
accomplish without it snagging on clothing or being uncomfortable
when sleeping, etc. A few rules of thumb to keep in mind are:
- Don’t sleep on your stomach for the first several weeks
- Always loosen the waistline of your clothing when sitting down
if possible
- Wear loose clothing when possible
- Don’t touch your belly button jewelry except when cleaning
- Avoid twisting or bending excessively
- Clean the area if you sweat more than usual
- Never let a pet jump into your lap or against your belly
button jewelry
- No roughhousing!
A good thing to keep in mind is that you should treat your belly
button area the same as you would a minor surgical wound until
healing is well-progressed, otherwise you may end up dealing with
belly button jewelry that is torn loose or infected.
