When your teenage daughter wants a navel piercing

More teenagers are getting a navel piercing every day, and the
peer pressure at school can be tremendous. This pressure gets passed
on to parents to allow their high school aged daughter to get a
navel piercing, especially when all of their friends are sporting
one. How do you decide if this is the best decision for your
daughter and whether you want to sign that consent form?
The most important thing to remember is that a navel piercing is
not just a simple cosmetic procedure or an investment in vanity –
it’s a permanent body modification. Talk to your daughter and make
sure she understands that this is not something she can change her
mind on.
Also discuss the long-term commitment. If she gets a navel
piercing, she will not be able to go swimming, wear tight clothing
or do some activities that will aggravate the healing piercing for
several weeks to several months. Discuss the hygiene issues involved
in a navel piercing as well. She will have to clean it every day, no
matter where she is or how tired or busy she is. Is she ready to
make this level of commitment?
Be honest in your own evaluation of your daughter’s level of
maturity as well. If she neglects chores, forgets to take care of
her pets and can’t be relied on for tasks around the house, she
can’t be relied on to take care of an open wound properly for the
three to six months required for proper healing. When you tell her,
“No,” offer to reevaluate the situation in six months, but explain
your reasons and standards she must meet to prove herself ready.
If, however, she has shown responsibility and maturity and is
willing to pay for the piercing herself (a definite sign of her
commitment), then as long as you periodically check the status of
her piercing there is no real reason why you can’t sign the consent
form and allow her to get a navel piercing.
You must, however, accompany her for the piercing and make sure
it is a licensed, professional piercer. Also make sure they use an
autoclave and single-use, sterilized needles.
