What to expect from a septum piercing

February 9, 2005
By:  Lori Wilkerson

If you are considering a septum piercing for your next body art, take some time to find out how it differs from the standard nostril piercing and find out what to expect. While nostril piercings (done on one side of the nose or the other) are far more common, septum piercings are gaining popularity and is quite safe when done by a reliable practitioner.

This type of piercing goes through the septum, the section directly through the center of the nose dividing it into two nostrils. Think of the nose ring they used to put through a bull’s nose years ago, but much more sophisticated. Septum jewelry is generally inserted through the fleshy skin below the cartilage, not the cartilage itself. Placed properly, it will be straight through towards the front of the nose and any nose rings will be able swing freely.

A good piercer will take the time to feel around before doing the piercing in order to make sure he pierces skin rather than cartilage in order to minimize discomfort and the amount of maintenance. He or she will also check for any veins or breaks in the skin to prevent too much bleeding. For a few days afterward, the nose will be tender and you should be careful to clean the area and follow the aftercare instructions given to you faithfully to minimize swelling, as with any piercing procedure.

When done well, a piercing through the septum is no more painful than any other nose piercing and gives you the opportunity to wear a wide variety of jewelry that isn’t practical with a nostril piercing. The range of septum jewelry available is impressive, including circular barbells, captive bead rings, spikes, curls, tusks, and septum retainers. If you’re considering a septum nose piercing, you’re making an attractive choice that has no greater risk than any other piercing and will make a definite statement!
