“Hands off” is the rule for a new labret piercing

A labret piercing has to be cared for carefully, just like all
body piercings, but there is a particular risk for some people with
this kind of piercing that seems to be more of a problem than with
some other types. A labret piercing, because of its location right
in the center of the lower part of the face, tends to run the risk
of more hand contact than other new piercings, making it prone to
the risk of infection or stretching of the piercing hole.
Many people will toy with a new labret because of the strange
feeling and simply because they enjoy playing with it, but this is
the worst possible thing to do. It will push bacteria and dirt into
the open wound of the labret piercing and increase the chance of
infection.
It can also cause tiny tears all around the hole, stretching the
opening and making it too large or uneven. Many times if a labret
piercing is turned or twisted repeatedly as a nervous habit, the
piercing will end up healing crooked, with the labret appearing
deeper set on one side than on the other.
Men with a labret piercing may be tempted to try and shave around
the area and move the stud or ring around in the process, and women
may try to apply makeup around their labret piercing. Both of these
are huge “no’s” until the healing is complete or you are defeating
every precaution you take to clean the area. Simply DO NOT touch the
labret except for the salt soaks and cleanings until it is
completely healed, however tempting it may be.
