Belly button piercings are the new status symbol

August 26, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

Remember way back in the old days when a shirt with a little alligator on it was stylish? Or more recently when designer monogrammed handbags were all the rage? Look around you – belly button piercings seem to be the new status symbol for women across America. Go to any major city and you’ll see belly button piercings flashed at night clubs, in malls and at just about every major event and celebration.

Belly button rings aren’t just little curved barbells, either. They’ve become status symbols that can be as flashy as a swingy crystal chandelier or as refined as a single natural pearl. Belly button piercings are seen on the beach and at the country club. Because they’re more than a fashion statement, quality as well as style has become very important.

A few years ago you would expect to find belly rings at piercing studios and in malls, but if you were looking to dress up your belly button piercings in something that could be considered a real jewelry investment, you were out of luck. Not anymore – more and more fine jewelry stores are carrying gold and platinum rings, some set with diamonds and other precious gems, for those belly button piercings that are showing up at swank addresses.

Now belly button piercings are demanding to be on the “jewelry best dressed list,” and designers are responding with fabulous designs and styles – just take a look at Paris Hilton’s belly button jewelry – it didn’t come from a bubble gum machine!
