Tattoos and piercings now equally represented by men and women
As recently as a decade ago, it was safe to say that tattoos and
piercings were divided along gender lines, with men generally
getting most of the tattoos and women more often getting pierced.
This is no longer the case according to recent studies. Now, tattoos
and piercings are enjoyed equally by both sexes.
Because tattoos and piercings have begun to show up on more parts
of the body and in a variety of new and unusual forms, they no
longer follow male/female preconceptions of what is feminine or
masculine. For instance, women are getting tattooed on the small of
the back, shoulder blades, and on their ankles, while men still tend
to favor their arms, chests and backs.
Ear and facial piercing is common for both men and women, but
nipple and navel piercing is still favored more by women. Certain
styles of tattoos and piercings do seem to be favored by gender,
however. For instance, more men go for ear plugs and engage in
stretching more than women do.
It’s obvious that tattoos and piercings are no longer restricted
to one gender or another and no longer are considered signs of
masculinity or femininity. Instead, tattoos and piercings are
reflections of individuality, body perception and taste that both
men and women have embraced and enjoy.
