Pierced nipple won’t interfere with breastfeeding

August 25, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

If you’ve had your nipple pierced and are now considering a family or have discovered you are pregnant, you may be concerned about your ability to breastfeed your infant. You shouldn’t lose any sleep over this, because there have been studies done recently that indicate that there’s no connection between nipple piercing and difficulty with breastfeeding. As long as you had your pierced nipple done at least one year before attempting to nurse, there is no reason you should have any problems according to most piercing experts and the LaLeche League, a recognized expert in the area of breastfeeding and lactation.

The reason it isn’t suggested you breastfeed with a recently pierced nipple is because it may not be fully healed, which can lead to infection. If you already have a piercing, of course, this isn’t a problem in most cases. There are a few things to keep in mind that will make breastfeeding with a pierced nipple easier.

A pierced nipple that is horizontal generally works better than one that is vertical, perhaps because it usually forms less scar tissue and engages less of the milk ducts. In any case, this more common type of pierced nipple is also the one that is best for breastfeeding.

Because pierced nipples involve putting the jewelry through an area where there are milk ducts, you may experience an interesting phenomenon when you nurse – milk may come out of the piercing holes! The good news is that this doesn’t affect breastfeeding at all. The baby will either lap it up while sucking or you will have some spillage. That’s it.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to always remove your nipple jewelry before nursing. This prevents any choking hazard for the baby and any potential infection for you. So if you have a pierced nipple, don’t regret it because now you’re pregnant and want to bond with your baby. Go ahead, take out that jewelry and breastfeed, and you can still wear the jewelry when you’re done!
