Tongue ring choice depends on taste, anatomy

If you want a tongue ring and haven’t consulted with a piercer
yet, be aware that there are a few things to take into consideration
before getting your tongue ring that may affect your choice of what
kind to get.
Some people know that they want a piercing right through the
center of their tongue, others are sure they want a tongue ring
along the edge of their tongue. But what if you go to get the
piercing and the piercer says that the one you want isn’t going to
work? Listen to him. He’s a professional and knows what he’s doing.
There are a few reasons why some types of piercing won’t work on
the tongue of some individuals. If you are “tongue tied,” which
means the connective tissue at the base of the mouth that holds the
tongue in place is connected too far forward on the bottom of the
tongue, a centered tongue piercing may not be possible. If you are
told this, don’t insist on attempting it; this bundle of nerves and
connective tissue is highly sensitive and filled with blood vessels.
Damaging it by adding a tongue ring can affect speech and cause
copious bleeding.
If this is the case, don’t despair! You can have a double tongue
ring piercing instead, where they are aligned side by side on the
tongue so that they are on either side of the connective tissue. Or
you could go with a rim tongue ring along the outside of the edge of
the tongue. With these, however, keep in mind that you should keep
these small gauge to lessen the chance of damage to the teeth and
gums.
