6 gauge ear piercing is a process that takes time

If you’ve had your ears pierced, you most likely started with a 16 gauge or 14 gauge piercing. If you’re thinking that now you’d like to move on to something more substantial and you’d like to stretch to a 6 gauge ear piercing, keep in mind that you shouldn’t try to stretch your lobes several sizes unless you want some serious pain along with that enlarged ear piercing.

Ear stretching requires time and patience to be done properly and without causing possible permanent damage to your lobes. Stretching actually involves increasing the size of the hole in the lobe by slowly enlarging the opening, which causes tiny micro-tears in the skin. These will then need to heal completely, which usually takes at least a month. After that, you can make the hole slightly larger again, and so on. Every other month is a good pace to ensure that you won’t cause damage and still progress with stretching so that you reach your 6 gauge goal in reasonable amount of time.

Use sea salt soaks just as you would for a fresh stretch for several days to draw out impurities and lessen the risk of infection until your stretch is completely healed. You should clean your 6 gauge stretched ear piercing (and each step along the way) with a mild anti-bacterial soap such as Satin or Provon, both of which are gentle without drying the skin too much.

When you have reached an ear lobe stretch that allows for a 6 ear gauge or some other similar size, you should always allow yourself to take out the plugs for a few hours each day to rest your lobes. This will help increase blood circulation to the lower part of the lobes and help oxygen exchange to keep the lobes healthier and more supple.
