Nipple piercings can go from basic to extreme

August 21, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

Most people start with pretty basic nipple piercings, going for the standard barbells at the back of the nipple, and some people are satisfied with that. They may change it up with the addition of nipple shields or try some new nipple ring styles occasionally, but they stick with fairly standard 14 gauge nipple piercings and love them.

Others decide they would like something a bit more individual, a bit more extreme for their nipple piercings. Men especially like something that’s a bit bolder, and will often move up to larger gauges. Stretching to an 8 or 6 gauge or more means they can put in more substantial hardware for a seriously masculine look. With long-term commitment and serious care, nipples can be stretched to gauges as low as 4 or less, although this is less common than the mid-range.

Multiple nipple piercings are also enjoyed by some. It seems that once you’ve nipple rings done, sometimes you can’t get enough. If horizontal bars were put in the first time, vertical bars are often put in the second time around. Others, knowing they want multiple piercings right off, will get criss-cross bars put in like X’s.

You can even stretch the nipples into larger gauge horizontal piercings with a bar or ring through it, and then have another, small gauge piercing done directly behind it vertically through the stretched flesh between the chest wall and the outer, pierced nipple area.

Obviously, nipple piercings aren’t just a matter of going in and saying “I want a nipple ring,” anymore. You need to do some research and understand what you want the true end result to be – there are so many options to choose from!
