New nose piercing needs extra care and healing time

Nose piercing is one of the most common piercings done, and is an
excellent choice for accenting facial features, since it is right in
the middle of the face. When you get a nose piercing, however, you
have more to keep in mind than simply whether you want a septum
piercing or a nostril piercing. This is a piercing that requires
more patience and extra care because of its location and the added
chance of infection.
Nose jewelry of any type is being put in an area of the body that
is very sensitive and laden with germs. The inside of the nose is
made of mucous membranes that are very delicate and easily damaged,
so aftercare of your piercing is very important to prevent scarring.
Be sure you follow your piercer’s instructions carefully and cleanse
regularly with a salt-water solution.
Bacteria and viruses collect in nasal passages and crusties will
build up – there is no way to prevent this if you get a nose
piercing. That’s why the cleansing is so important, and why you must
always remember to use the antibiotic ointment or rinse given to you
as often as directed. A nose piercing is always dark and damp inside
the nostril, making a nice breeding ground for infection if you
don’t keep things clean!
You will also need to keep your nose piercing in for a longer
amount of time than with an ear piercing or navel piercing. Rather
than eight weeks or so, you should leave nose rings in for at least
six months. Why so long? Because mucous membranes will generally
close quickly, so the hole will tend to close quickly if it isn’t
completely healed. Conversely, mucous membranes stay tender and
“raw” for longer periods. While the piercing may seem healed on the
surface, if you remove rings or nostril screws too early, it can
tear or pull at the mucous membrane, setting back the healing
process by several weeks.
The best rule of thumb for a nose piercing is, “the longer the
wait before changing the ring, the better the result.”
