Can I still breastfeed after getting a nipple ring?

August 21, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

Some women who are considering a nipple ring worry about future family plans. If they have children, they wonder, will they be able to breastfeed their baby or babies or will having been pierced interfere with nursing? The good news is that there’s no evidence that a nipple ring has any effect on the breast’s ability to provide nourishment or how well it performs when nursing.

In most cases, there is no difference in the feel of nursing or how the baby will take the nipple. The only difference may be if you had a poorly done piercing and there is some scar tissue, which may make nursing slightly more uncomfortable. In rare cases, milk may flow from the piercing hole where the nipple ring was, but this doesn’t happen often, and only if a milk duct was nicked during the piercing process. On the whole, however, you will feel no different than any new mother breastfeeding.

In all cases, however, you should remove your nipple ring before nursing your baby. It can interfere with milk flow when in place and is also a breeding ground for bacteria if left in during and after breastfeeding.

Don’t get a nipple ring put in while you are pregnant, because the piercing can take several weeks to several months to heal, and you do want to make sure your breast is completely healed before nursing your child. Of course, no piercing is a good idea while you are pregnant because of the added stress on the body.

If you already have a nipple ring or two, however, rest assured that simply removing them will mean that you and your baby can bond while you successfully breastfeed.
