Ear piercing is such a generic term that it just doesn’t begin to
describe what can be done to the ear anymore. Now there are so many
options that when you say, “Hey, I want my ears pierced,” you had
better be more specific about what kind of piercing or modification you’re
talking about.
Standard ear rings can be enhanced by moving to larger gauges,
slowly stretching the hole in the lobe in order to accommodate ever
larger gauge ear rings. Eventually, they can be stretched to hold
ear plugs that may be made of acrylic, metal, wood or resin. This is
one style of modification to the ear that is rapidly growing in popularity and
is relatively easy to do and take care of. Ear eyelets are basically
the same, but the plugs are actually hollow rings placed in the ear
holes.
If you do want to stick with piercing the ear in a way that doesn’t enlarge
the lobe, you can also consider piercing other areas of the ear.
Cartilage piercing gives you numerous options, including the top
crescent of the ear and the inner folds of the ear. This kind of piercing is popular because there are so many great options,
including the tragus, rook, and industrial piercing.
Some people like to combine a few different piercing and
modification styles
so that there is a cluster of different sizes and styles of ear
rings in their ears.
