Just what is extreme body piercing?

August 07, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

Extreme body piercing is a pretty broad term, and there’s no agreement on what it is, but you can pretty well tell what it isn’t. You have your ears pierced a few times? That’s not extreme. You have your face pierced in at least eight places, plus your nipples and you’re sporting a Prince Albert? Most people will say you’re into extreme body piercing.

Body modification is another term you’ll hear that refers to extreme body piercing, since you are really moving beyond just somewhere to hang a few little earring dangles. Extreme body piercing can also involve such procedures as surface piercings, labia piercings and clitoral hood piercings. Any of these procedures are more difficult than regular procedures and should only be done by someone very experienced with them.

Of course, unusual is all in the eye of the beholder, too. In general, all female genital piercings can be considered a form of extreme body piercing. Now that so many college girls and housewives are getting their nipples pierced, however, it’s not really considered any more unusual than getting a lip or eyebrow ring. BME has lots of information and forums with information about extreme body piercing and what it involves.

Most people advance to extreme body piercing after they’ve had a number of more conventional piercings and have found that they enjoy the process of piercing as well as the appearance. Very few people start with an extreme piercing, and shouldn’t. Once you’ve had one extreme piercing, though, you’ll probably get more. It can be addictive, and the community of those who enjoy body modification is friendly and supportive.
