Know what to expect when getting a tongue piercing

Tongue piercing is an art form that should be done only by a
professional, since the tongue is an extremely sensitive body part
with lots of nerve endings and blood vessels. The procedure for
tongue piercing should follow a very specific routine to ensure as
little bleeding and swelling as possible and to make sure your
piercing will be comfort in the long run.
First, the mouth is rinsed thoroughly with a disinfectant
solution to get rid of bacteria and cleanse the area. Then, the
tongue is dried and clamped so that the piercer can mark the spot
for the tongue piercing. A clamp steadies the tongue and should
always be used, because there is a web of tissue and veins
underneath the tongue that connect to the base of the mouth that
needs to be avoided. A good piercer will center and place the
piercing needle properly, and then put a barbell in place through
the hole created.
The barbell used will vary in size depending upon the thickness
of your tongue, but will always be longer than what you will
probably end up wearing after healing is done. This is to allow for
the swelling of the tongue that is normal with a tongue piercing.
The entire procedure should only take a few minutes, and should be
done with the piercer wearing rubber or latex gloves and using
sterile equipment.
There will be swelling of the tongue and some discomfort for a
few days, and you should eat soft foods and liquids for the first
several days and rinse with a disinfectant mouthwash recommended by
your piercer after every meal and before bedtime. Sucking on ice
chips for the first few days can also help with mild pain, as can
Tylenol.
By carefully following your piercer’s recommendations, you will
heal within a few weeks and can replace the barbell in your tongue
piercing with a shorter one once the swelling is completely down.
You can then start enjoying the wide range of stylish tongue rings
available.
