Grim reaper tattoos have appeal through the years

Tattoo Gallery & Pictures

One of the cool things about tattoos is how certain styles evolve and change through the years as the artistic approaches to tattooing change as well. It's neat to look back at old school designs like grim reaper tattoos and compare the older styles of tattoos of the same image today.

Older grim reaper designs tend be more colorful and perhaps less scary, at least by today's standards. They aren't exactly naturalistic looking and instead take on a more cartoonish appearance. However, old school tattoos are fun for anyone who is interested in tattooing history, so this isn't to say that an old school design makes a bad grim reaper tattoo. It depends on what you're going for.

The trends now seem to be geared toward less color and more use of black in the design of the grim reaper. This makes the tattoos definitely look more eerie and frightening. Some are even influenced by the tribal tattooing style, with pointed black lines creating the form of the reaper. Other designs that aren't all black take on more naturalistic elements, like the shadowing of the reaper's face and the detail of his eyes. Tattoos by Design has one such example.

That tattoos of grim reapers, having been around for so long, says something about this design. What's so appealing about having a tattoo of a symbol of death? Does it make you look tougher because you can face death head on, or does it remind you of your personal escape from death? Maybe you simply think it looks cool. Ultimately, what it means is totally up to you.
