The difference between plugs and flesh tunnels, and where to find them

February 01, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

During the process of stretching a piercing, tapers are used to enlarge the hole. Once the hole is stretched, you must insert a piece of jewelry that helps retain the newly stretched hole. Plugs and flesh tunnels are an excellent choice for this use. Both allow you to retain the size of your piercing.

What is the difference between flesh tunnel plugs and regular ear plugs? The former is a hollow tube used in stretched piercings in several different locations on the body. You can use a flesh tunnel in your tongue, nipple, a few different genital piercings, and in your ears.

Ear plugs are solid all the way through. The jewelry may be the same size all the way around or the ends might be flared and wider around the ends compared to the middle of the piece. Unlike a tunnel, a plug is going to be worn only in stretched lobe piercings. This type of jewelry is shorter and designed for thinner areas like the ear.

You can find a large selection of tunnels and plugs in different gauge sizes at Painful Pleasures. Materials include silicone, stainless steel, and organic horn – you can choose whichever feels or looks best in your piercing. They have a large selection of designs too, from stars to crosses. The tunnels are available in a variety of colors. Also, the jewelry is inexpensive enough to buy in several sizes if you are still in the process of using a taper to enlarge your piercing.
